Chapter Six

“No!”

Harriet was furious at this turn of events. Which picture next? he asked. As if he was going to kiss her like that and then just walk away? It was just too much like last time and too much like every time.

“No?” he said, and turned and regarded her with surprise, as if he expected her to be holding back tears.

How did men always end up with all the power? It came to her—a sudden illumination—that she might have a basic problem with her thought processes when it came to her approach to Ty Jordan.

She had come here to retrieve power given away. Did she think Ty was in charge of that power? Did she think he was going to offer it to her?

She had to take it. And suddenly she knew exactly how to do that.

She stalked across the hayloft after him. His eyes widened as he saw her coming. He planted himself, legs apart, arms across his chest, brows knifing downward. He looked as big as a mountain and twice as intimidating.

“Don’t,” he warned her.

But she was done being warned, bossed around. Tired of being told, You’re frigid from Zorro, or You’re fire from Ty. They were just flip sides of the same coin. Who were they to decide what she was? How dare they presume to do so! Harriet knew, suddenly and with certainty, she had to find out for herself who she was, know for herself what she was.

Taking a deep breath, summoning all her courage, she covered the distance between them. When she stood in the shadow of his broad shoulders, the realization crossed his features that he knew she wasn’t just going to obey him.

“I’m not a puppy,” she told him. “Don’t you dare say ‘don’t’ to me.”

He held her gaze, then looked away to Basil. “I’m not having much luck with him, either. Not that I’m insinuating you’re in the same category. At all.”

It pleased her that his gargantuan confidence seemed to be failing. In fact, he unfolded his arms. He backed up a step. He looked as if he was going to turn and run. She launched herself at him, intending to wrap her arms around his midsection, pull him to her, make him surrender to the attraction between them.

But she misjudged the distance, and hit him harder than she had expected. He was already partly turned, and the force took him off guard. His knee folded under him, and he began to topple, and her momentum carried her down with him.

He wrapped his arms around her, protecting her from the fall, even though she was aware she really didn’t deserve his protection. The hay cushioned them, but bits of grass and dust exploded around them as they fell into it.

She sneezed hard, three times in a row, then buried herself against his chest, utterly humiliated.

“This could only happen to me,” she said. “Only I could decide to kiss a man and end up bowling him over, literally. And sneezing all over him.
